Shahabad district, also known as Arrah district, had its headquarters at Arrah.

This district was a Bhojpuri-speaking district in western Bihar, India, forming Bihar's western border with Uttar Pradesh. The total area under Shahabad region was 28.2 lakh acres, in which paddy was cultivated on 41 percent of the total area, maize and pulses on 54 percent and cash crops on 5 percent. According to the received data, from 1951 to 1962, 59 thousand acres of land was barren in the entire Shahabad region.

During this period, the fields were irrigated by the farmers with ahar, pine and well for irrigation. In 1972, Shahabad district was divided into two districts, named Bhojpur and Rohtas respectively. Formerly Bhojpur district included Buxar district. On March 17, 1991, Buxar district was carved out of Bhojpur district.
